Theatre for a New Audience’s 2008-2009 Winter–Spring season continues with Hamlet at The Duke on 42nd Street, with previews beginning March 19 and performances running through April 12.
Shakespeare was a great artistic explorer. Peter Brook, one of the world’s greatest directors, said, “Shakespeare has never been a dead author. At every epoch, in every culture, he is alive, like an ocean in which every drop is endlessly on the move – he can never be caught in a net. There can never be a definitive interpretation of his characters, nor of his staging. All must be constantly re-examined.” In fact, every four hours a new production of Hamlet begins rehearsals somewhere around the world.Hamlet is, of course, a story of a brilliant and darkly humorous young prince deeply unsettled about his future. David Esbjornson (Hamlet’s director), Christian Camargo (who plays Hamlet), and the entire company have set out to uncover what Hamlet means for us now. In a recent profile in The New York Times, Matthew Gurewitsch reflected on Mr. Camargo’s recent theatre, television, and film roles, and declared that the actor has been “polishing the facets of a potentially hypnotic Hamlet for quite some time.”
