This October, Theatre for a New Audience’s Associate Artistic Director, Arin Arbus, and Cicely Berry, Director of Voice of The Royal Shakespeare Company, led a workshop on Measure for Measure, the play Arbus will direct later this season.
Nine actors and four members of the production team participated in the workshop, during which the group had the opportunity to discuss and experiment with ideas relating to the show’s design. Berry, the Voice and Text Consultant for the production, led exercises that explored the language of the play. Berry has worked on many productions with the Theatre over the past fifteen years, and is also a member of our Artistic Council.
“This workshop an was essential step in the development of this production,” says Arbus, who also directed last season’s acclaimed production of Othello. “Measure for Measure is a tricky play. It is thought by some to be a treatise on nihilism, while others believe it’s simply a problem comedy. Cis’ exercises helped to revealed how the language evokes the world of the play.”
Measure for Measure begins previews at The Duke on 42nd Street on February 6, 2010. For more information, please visit http://www.tfana.org/.
