This season, as Theatre for a New Audience explores the theme of the Outsider, Academy Award-winner F. Murray Abraham joins us to play Shylock in The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, directed by Darko Tresjnak, and Barabas in The Jew of Malta by Christopher Marlowe, directed by David Herskovits, in rotating repertory. The 14-member company of actors includes Kate Forbes (acclaimed for her performance last season in All’s Well that Ends Well) as Portia in the Shakespeare and Bellamira, the courtesan, in the Marlowe.
After its New York engagement, Merchant will tour to the Royal Shakespeare Company to be presented in its Complete Works Festival.
The third play for our 28th season is Oliver Twist, based on the classic novel by Charles Dickens as adapted and directed by Neil Bartlett. This American Premiere is produced by Theatre for a New Audience in association with American Repertory Theatre, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Berkeley, California.
