Theatre for a New Audience announces our 30th Anniversary Season, presenting three productions in which love, lust and longing distract and consume.
The season will begin with Rinde Eckert’s music theatre piece Orpheus X, directed by Robert Woodruff (Chair, Saved). This New York premiere draws from several sources, including the Sixth Century Greek poet Ibyous and the Roman poets Virgil and Ovid. Eckert and Woodruff reinvent this ancient myth for our time with acting and singing by three extraordinary artists: Mr. Eckert, Suzan Hanson and John Kelly; as well as a live band of piano, guitar, viola, percussion and bass.
Next, director Arin Arbus (Othello), returns to stage William Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure. Corrupt power confronts ruthless justice, the letter of the law obscures the quality of mercy, and the noblest of spirits must reflect on the basest of appetites in this sly, bawdy, provocative and extraordinarily modern play.
Finally, we will present the New York premiere of C.I.C.T./Theatre des Bouffes du Nord production of Love is My Sin, the Sonnets of William Shakespeare, adapted by Peter Brook. The piece features 29 sonnets chosen and arranged by Peter Brook exploring the themes: Devouring Time, Separation, Jealousy and Time Defeated.
