Theatre for a New Audience celebrated Shakespeare’s 445th birthday with the annual Spring Gala on Monday, May 11 at The Powerhouse at the American Museum of Natural History.
Juliet Rylance and Christian Camargo, who played Desdemona and Hamlet in the Theatre’s spring productions of Othello and Hamlet, respectively, led the event as Masters of Ceremonies.
Actor Mark Rylance was honored with The Samuel H. Scripps Award for Extraordinary Commitment to Promoting the Power of Language in Classical and Contemporary Theatre. Mr. Rylance is a member of the Theatre’s Artistic Council and has been associated with the Theatre for more than 15 years. Actor Christine Baranski presented Mr. Rylance with the award. They appeared together in the 2008 production of Boeing-Boeing, for which Mr. Rylance won the Tony Award for best actor.
The Gala, which raised $460,000 for the Theatre’s annual campaign and education residency program, was generously sponsored by Deloitte LLP and chaired by Dr. Robert Ascheim, a member of the Theatre’s board of directors.
